Blush can be a girl's best friend, giving you a healthy glow that can brighten up every feature on your face. Having a blush palette makes it easy to find a shade that works well with your skin tone, but if you don't know how to apply it, you could still end up looking more like Bozo than a beauty queen.

The way you apply blush should depend on the shape of your face, according to RealBeauty.com. Generally, your face fits into one of four shape categories - round, square, heart or oval - that can dictate how to apply makeup.

Round faces

If you have a round face, you can use blush to contour it and make it look slimmer. Using a the blush brush from your makeup brush set, blend the color from the lower part of the apple of your cheek, under the cheekbone to your hairline.

Square faces

Square faces tend to feature sharp jawlines, but you can visually cut the angular jaw in half by applying blush under the lower apple, straight back to the ear.

Heart faces

Faces that are heart-shaped tend to have a nearly nonexistent jawline but large apples on the cheeks. It is best to apply color to the apples of the cheeks, then blend downward and back toward the ear.

Oval faces

Oval-shaped faces can wear blush almost any which way, but it can help to apply it to the apples of your cheeks and just underneath them to create an illusion of fullness, according to BellaSugar.

You can top off almost any blush with a bit of bronzer to give it a sunkissed, glowy look.
