In most instances, the smokey eye style is reserved for nighttime affairs like going out with friends or on a romantic date with your beau. However, if there was a way to make the style appropriate for daytime events, would you try it? Allure Magazine recently broke down the ultimate day-appropriate smokey eye and fashionistas everywhere need to take notice.

According to the magazine, the key to rocking work- or school-appropriate smokey eyes is to understand eyeliner.

Be bold with black
A professional makeup artist told the news source using black eyeliner - and not much else - creates a perfect combination of smokey and sweet. Try applying a soft black pencil and then spread out the hue using a fluffy, eyeshadow brush, working to change the hue to a softer gray up to the crease lines on top.

Finish the look by curling your lashes and then swiping on a few coats of volumizing mascara.

Bring it on with brown
Not into black eyeliner? No problem, try brown instead, the artist suggests. For this look start by applying your go-to concealer on your top lids to create a foundation - apply a touch under your bottom lids as well. Next, grab your chocolate brown eyeliner and rim your lids in a thin line.

"Then smudge the line with a brush or [y]our fingers so it almost looks like leftover eye makeup," the makeup expert told the news source. "It gives the eyes a bit of definition without looking like [you're] wearing loads of makeup."

Enhance the look even further wearing a light pink color on your cheeks and a similar hue on your lips.

Gray days
There is perhaps nothing better than the magic that happens when you pair gray colors with mauve or purple hues. This combination is literally to die for and ladies everyone can rock these shades for a lovely daytime smokey eye.

For this gorgeous look, start by rimming your eyes in brown eyeliner and then swipe on a light, gray powder eyeshadow on top. For the finishing touch, pick up a darker mauve toned eyeshadow and brush it in at the crease lines on top and around the outer corners to enhance the color of your eyes. This lovely combination is the perfect way to spice up the dark and dreary days of winter.
