One of the biggest trends this spring is bright pink, red or orange lip color that has a completely matte finish. This look can be totally chic, but if done wrong, you can look like a little kid whose multiple servings of fruit punch stained her lips red. There are several things to keep in mind when you are rocking this red lipstick trend.

Matte skin. Glamour Magazine makes an example out of Alexis Bledel, who recently rocked bright red matte lips at an event. The Gilmore Girls actress kept her entire makeup palette matte as well. This is important because when your skin is shiny and your lips are matte, you look sweaty, the news outlet reports.

Blush. You need to have some color on your cheeks to make this lip palette work. This is especially important if you have light skin, as a bright pop of color on your lips can be jarring to the eye if you skip blush and bronzer, and make you look washed out.

Concealer. Wearing a matte red lipstick can bring attention to any red undertones in your skin (and highlight the hue of pimples), so make sure you have layered concealer under your cosmetics. You should also outline your red lips with concealer to ensure the contrast between color and skin is stark.
