Your Guide To Looking Good This Graduation

The time has finally come! All your hard work has paid off, and you’re about to walk across that stage into your new life as a graduate! From all of us at BH… Congratulations!!!

Now, let’s get down to business. We know you’ve been anticipating this day for a long time. Graduation, like Prom, is a day you’ll remember for the rest of your life, thanks in part to all the photos your family is going to be embarrassingly taking of you all. day. long. Unlike Prom, graduation comes with a bulky, shapeless gown and a hair-crushing cap. On top of all that, early summer sweats, tears of joy, and flash photography are all working against you. That’s where we come in. We’ve compiled a list of tips to look your best on this memorable day.

The Hair

When it comes to graduation hair, the mane focus is the cap. That said, up-dos are a definite no-no. Assuming your graduation is outside, you’ll want to choose a style that will hold up in the summer heat. A simple beachy wave is always a safe choice and will look great even when you’re hit with gusts of wind. If you’re not the best at self-styling, going for a blowdry could be a lifesaver, as it will stay looking fresh throughout the day – and if there’s one thing we know about graduations, it’s that it’s going to be a long day. If you decide to style yourself, be sure to apply setting spray before and after curling to give your hair some extra staying power. Secure your cap at home using a few bobby pins so you know exactly how it will look on your hair. If you’re going out right after the ceremony and plan to remove your hat, be sure to stuff a mini root revitalizer in your purse so you can get back a bit of volume and combat your inevitable hat hair.

The Outfit

We know your outfit will be basically covered in your gown, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important! Since your robe will already be bulky, try wearing something sleek like a loose, free flowing dress. If your gown doesn’t have pockets, choose an outfit that does so you can carry your essentials nearby. You may be tempted to compensate for your hidden outfit by choosing extravagant shoes, but it’s important to remember to be comfortable! You’ll be doing a lot of standing, so make sure your shoes are worn in by graduation day to prevent blisters. Last but not least, don’t forget to clean and groom your nails! You’re going to want to snap an iconic shot of you with your hard-earned diploma, and chipped and grimy nails will distract from your big accomplishment.

The Skin

Taking care of your skin is by far the best way to achieve a healthy glow on your big day. Before beginning your makeup routine, make sure to gently exfoliate your skin and lips to remove any dead skin. Treat yourself to a brightening mask to make up for any moisture that you lost while exfoliating and leave your face looking healthy and radiant in photos. Assuming your graduation is outside, don’t forget sunscreen! No matter how you take care of your skin, if you don’t wear sunscreen, you're just fighting an uphill battle. Be sure to use both moisturizer and primer under your foundation to help your makeup hold longer and appear smoother.

The Makeup

Since your hair and outfit will mostly be hidden under your cap and gown, your makeup is your one chance to show off your individuality. The most important thing to remember about your graduation makeup is to be yourself, but there are a few things to think about before choosing your look. Since you’ll likely be wearing your cap all day, it’s important to consider that the brim is going to cast a shadow over your eyes. Adding a few extra dabs of concealer to your undereye will prevent the appearance of dark circles, while a pop of opalescent shadow in the corner of your eyes will definitely help them appear brighter and wider. You might say you’re not going to cry now, but trust us… when the tears come gushing you’ll be glad you wore waterproof mascara. Finally, (and this is a given) it’s crucial to pick products that are designed to last all day. Check out some graduation inspo below:

Naturally Sunkissed

Luminous skin is a must for the cameras. Graduation makeup is traditionally about looking effortless and fresh, so we love this natural sunkissed look that @makeup_mandi created on @jamienkidd using our Spotlight Highlight and Brilliance Bronzer. She swept a bit of highlighter on the high planes of her cheeks for a glowy and youthful look, and topped it off with a playful pink lip for a bit of color.

Golden Eyes

@velabeauty created this golden goddess look using our Daisy Marquez Palette. Going for a natural look with a hint of glow is a safe choice because it will never go out of style. Take it over the top with a solid contour and highlighter so you’re snatched from every photo angle.

Light Smokey Eye

While we do love a smokey eye, covering your entire lid might feel too harsh, especially if you’re taking photos outside. Instead of doing a full-on smokey eye, achieve a toned down look by simply lining your eyes with your shadow. The effect will still look smoky without being overdone. @rachellekathleen created this light smokey look using our Mini Zodiac: Capricorn Palette. You can shop all the mini zodiac palettes here. (As a side note, we’re loving this hair for graduation!)

Bold and Matte

You can never go wrong with a bold pout in a classic color. We love how @leabelle_ made her power lip the focus of her look by keeping the rest of her face neutral and matte using our Ultimate Matte Palette. No shiny photos happening here. Tip: If you go for a bold lip, be sure to line your lips before applying color, and opt for a long-lasting and smudge proof lippy to prevent running throughout the day. Make sure to pop your lip color in your purse so you can reapply as needed.

Soft Pink

Even if you don’t wear blush every day, pink cheeks are a great way to make your skin appear fresh, healthy, and youthful. @monicahsu created this pretty pink look using our Blushing in Bali Palette. An angled wing and natural looking falsies complete the look.

Bold but Understated

This probably isn't the time to bust out your brightest shadows or dark smoky eyes, but you can still make a statement without overdoing it. @itsmyrayeraye created this soft and sultry look using her signature palette. She brightened up her dark eyes by applying a golden shadow to the corners, and topped off the look with a bold, matte lip color.

We hope these ideas have given you inspiration! Remember: It’s easy to get wrapped up in all the excitement around graduation, but don’t forget to take a moment to be proud of all you’ve accomplished! YOU DID IT!
