Influencer Spotlight - @marvynmacnificent

You know him for his bold unicorn-inspired BH Marvycorn Palette, but there’s a lot more than meets the eye with German beauty influencer Marvyn Macnificent. From growing up in Germany to becoming an international beauty icon, this versatile MUA has never lost sight of who he is. In honor of the brand new Marvyn Macnificent Palette and Brush Set launching with BH this week, fellow beauty-lover Zackary Vang sat down with Marvyn to ask some pressing questions.

Now that you’ve had a preview, take an in depth look at the man behind the makeup.

1. What was it like growing up in Germany?

Being here in LA for quite some time now, I can tell that people over here are more chatty. They like to talk and they like to do compliments on the streets. In Germany, the mentality is a little bit different. You don’t go up to somebody and be like, “I love your bag,” “I love your highlight,” “Your nails are poppin’.” You don’t do that. It’s not our culture; people would feel weird. So that’s what I like over here. People are so nice. I feel like you don’t have to match the beauty standard that’s out there to get a nice compliment and to feel good. If you just have your bag and that bag is cute, somebody will come over and be like, “OMG I love your bag.” That’s what I love about the US.

2. What inspired you to get into beauty?

To be honest, Gigi Gorgeous inspired me the most. I found her when I was 17. I was in a difficult state of mind at that moment, I had a lot of trouble going on health-wise, and I was forced to kind of stay at home and take time for myself. So I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do, who I wanted to be, who I was, actually. And I found her channel, and back then, she hadn’t come out as transgender yet. I saw a boy in makeup and heels and I thought, “okay I want to do this as well.” So I kind of flew into it because of her. And you know what? Tomorrow I’m going to her book tour.

3. What is your favorite thing about working with BH Cosmetics?

First of all, I started using BH eyeshadow as my first eyeshadow ever. And I literally have a video on my channel where I had the Carli Bybel Palette and I was just like “OMG look a this.” And how they put the little penguin for her on it. I said “If I have a palette with BH some day, I would have a unicorn.” And some day, we got in contact and now I have a palette with a Marvycorn inside. I really love that I’m so free when I work with them. We work together so it’s not just me like, “I want this and this and this,” they obviously also tell me what’s possible and what would be smart and maybe not. But I have a lot of opportunities. I’m very free. I feel like BH is so f**king good at highlighters and eyeshadows, and it’s affordable. So I know my community, especially more young people, can afford it. I love BH. I love you sisters!

4. What inspired you to choose the shades in your new palette?

Back in 2017, I used to be very colorful myself. I liked mint, green hair, pastel pink, I was wearing cute kawaii stuff and holographics. Over time I got more... I would say glam. I still like to play with color as well. But I’m more natural day glam. So I wanted to do a palette that matches my personality now. Also, I had this super crazy one (Marvycorn) and it looked more colorful than it actually was. It had three crazy shades in it, but the rest of it was kind of neutral. But the palette itself was so colorful that a lot of my following was also like, “I don’t really know if it’s for me.” So I wanted to have something complementary. That’s why I went for a more natural one.

5. What is your go-to everyday look?

If I’m lazy, I would use bronze, rose gold and a little nude color on my lid. But sometimes I like to go in on an average day. It just depends on the mood. Sometimes I don’t even wear makeup.

6. What advice do you have for an aspiring MUA?

I would say always be yourself. That’s what everyone says, but I feel like if you’re really just yourself, and you put yourself out there, people will realize that it’s your true self, and not someone you just play to get attention. So just be yourself, put out the content you really like to throw out there, and everything will come through. And hustle. Work your a** off, because it wasn’t easy to get to the place I’m at right now, it was a lot of work. But you can make it. If you’re into all of it and you really want to do it, you can.

7. What three words best describe you as a person?

I would say honest, warm-hearted and funny.

8. If you weren’t in beauty, what career would you choose?

When I was younger, I wanted to be a designer first, since I loved to draw and paint on paper - and then I switched to my face. That was the first thing I really wanted to be. After that, I wanted to be a professional dancer. That’s probably something a lot of people don’t know. I was in a dancing school for such a long time doing choreography to chart music, like Lady Gaga and Beyonce and Cardi. And I really want to get back into it. When I started my social media, it was so much work that I kind of lost my passion in dancing and I didn’t dance for so long. I really want to bring it to life again.

9. You’ve been staying in LA for a couple of weeks now. Where is your favorite spot to hang out in Los Angeles?

I love Gracias Madre. I always want to sit outside. The lights in the evening? Sickening. The cauliflower over there? Are you kidding me. I live for it. I tried it in 2017 for the first time and it was my jam. Since then, I always get it.

10. If you were stranded on a desert island and you could only have 2 makeup products, what would they be?

If I wasn’t supposed to do a full makeup look, I would probably just bring an eyebrow gel. I usually dye my eyebrows, so if I’m going to be there for a long time and they will grow out, I will have light brows. That’s a no go. So I need the brow gel. And then… I don’t really need more. I feel good with just the brow gel. Maybe a lash. And then I could just wet my lips with the sea water and just be looking glossy.

11. What has been your proudest moment?

Obviously my palettes and the brush set, Marvycorn and this Marvyn Macnificent one, it’s so cool just to create something on your own with a brand you love and to put something out there for your subscribers and the people who follow you. This is obviously one of my proudest moments. But also just to be able to support my family, my mom - I’m going to fly her into California for the first time in her whole life. She’s wanted to come to California since she was 14 and she’s never been, so working off the bucket list of my mom is one of my proudest moments. So my palette, and this. I’m so excited for my mom to come over here, I think she’s going to love it.
