A Quick Guide to Perfect Face Makeup Application

There are no rights and wrongs when it comes to makeup application, but knowing when to apply what can be confusing. Even the pros can sometimes end up falling into a cosmetics rut, skipping over one of those basic steps that may seem simple, but are oh-so-important for achieving that flawless finish.

From the initial prep steps and creating a base, to adding in color, drama and personality, this quick face makeup application guide will help you to perfect your routine, technique and style.

Step 1: The Prep Work

It doesn’t need to take long, but prep is key for flawless makeup. Even if you’re only going for the lightest of looks, make sure that your skin is cleansed and moisturized. Then, apply a layer of primer to give your makeup some extra staying-power.

Step 2: Build a Foundation

What comes first; foundation or concealer? Everyone does things their own way, but foundation before concealer is usually the preferred option. Use a foundation brush or a damp Beauty Blender to apply your foundation, making sure that you blend this down to your neck too.

Step 2: Build a Foundation

Step 3: Conceal & Brighten

Dab your concealer onto any blemishes, dark circles, or areas of redness to cover them over. One trick used by many to brighten up the entire face is applying a concealer in a triangular shape underneath the eyes, and blending well.

Step 4: Highlights & Shadows

Run your highlighter down your Cupid’s bow, over the tops of your cheekbones, over your chin, into the inner corners of your eyes, and between your brows. Then, apply a contouring product to the hollows of your cheekbones and the outer sides of your nose. Blend everything in well for a defined and structured finish.

Step 4: Highlights & Shadows

Step 5: Rosy Cheeks

Where should you apply your blush? Smile into the mirror and dab your blush onto the apples of your cheeks, before blending it upwards towards your temple. Remember - less is more!

Step 6: Eyeshadow & Eyeliner

Whether you’re going neutral or dramatic, it’s usually easiest to apply your eye shadow before your eyeliner. Pick a shade from your eyeshadow palette and then dust the shadow onto your lids, adding a darker shade into your crease. Blend outwards with an eyeshadow brush, and then line your eyes with an eyeliner. For some added sparkle, top your lids with a glitter eyeshadow, after applying your liner.

Step 7: Seductive Lashes

Mascara should always be the last eye product you apply, so give those eye lashes a swipe or two with a volumizing mascara to really make them stand out. You could also apply some fake eyelashes at this stage for that extra flutter.

Step 8: Pout Perfection

It’s now time to focus on your lips by lining them and then filling them in, making sure that your lip liner and your cream or liquid lipstick are both the same shade. For a look that lasts even longer, finish your makeup application with a dusting of a setting powder
