Have you always wanted to be a makeup artist? The professionals on TV always make the process of applying makeup look easy, but it takes training to be considered a true professional in this field. How else would you be able to figure out what colors work best together, or how you should properly apply eye shadow?
You might think you know all there is to know from your personal experience applying your own makeup, but there's always more to learn. Let's take a look at 5 secrets learned at makeup artist school that'll take your abilities to the next level.
Secret #1: Concealing flaws
Knowing how to identify the right color to cover up any unwanted color on the human skin will get you far as a makeup artist, and it's something you'll most certainly learn in makeup school. That means you have to be able to recognize someone's undertones and figure out how to use the right colors to cover up any flaws that are unsightly.
Think of the redness of a blemish or dark circles under someone's eyes. One major secret you'll learn in makeup artist school is that opposite colors cancel each other out. That means you'll have to know what colors are actually considered to be opposite of one another. That comes with time, practice, and education.
Secret #2: Properly shaping the eyes
Light and shadow can do wondrous things for the shape of your eyes. Whether your eyes are large and round, narrow, droopy, and so on you can use light and shading to change them to your liking.
There are many ways you can go about doing this. For example, girls with blue eyes can make their eyes appear even bluer with an orange bronzer. Those who have mature skin can give their face more definition by sweeping a light bronzer through the crease of the eye (this is located in the halfway point between the eyebrow and the lashline).
Similar techniques can be used to widen narrower eyes, lift droopy eyes, and "open up" smaller eyes. Essentially every eye type can be made to look different depending on your knowledge of lighting and shading.
Secret #3: Conceal dark circles underneath the eyes
If you're plagued by dark spots under your eyes, there's a technique that'll allow you to conceal them as if they weren't even there in the first place. Mixing the right type of concealers can do wonders for the right skin tone.
Take your concealer brush and apply your custom concealer to the underside of your eye in a shape that resembles a "V." At this point, you'll buff the concealer into your skin until you reach the center point of your lower lid.
Frankly, learning how to customize your own concealer is one secret that's extremely valuable and well worth the effort of going to make up artist school. With the right application, you'll be able to eliminate any dark circles that rest underneath your eyes.
Secret #4: Buy high-quality tools
If you want to make it big as a makeup artist, you're going to need the right tools for the job. Even cheap tools can be made to work well if they're wielded by a true professional. However, the quality will suffer. Now throw mediocre products into the mix, and you're just asking for a bad makeup day. That's why spending real money and investing in the right tools will take you far in this industry.
This rule isn't just unique to the makeup industry -- artists get the best quality pens and pencils, musicians play the highest quality instruments, and chefs use the highest quality cooking utensils. Simply put, quality tools can and will make a difference no matter what you're doing. In this case, it'll most certainly make you a better makeup artist.
Secret #5: Learn to use opposite colors to your advantage
The color wheel is truly fascinating if you learn how to utilize it properly. Colors can either work together or work against one another -- it all depends on the application. Let's look at using opposite colors together as an example. Opposite colors may very well cancel each other out when they're layered on top of one another. However, when they're placed side by side, they can complement each other (most certainly a secret you'll learn in makeup school).
So, if you have green eyes, it wouldn't hurt to add red, it's opposite color, for a bit of contrast. You don't have to be flamboyant with it. A bit of red undertone can do wonders to truly bring out green eyes. The same is true for blue eyes and orange undertones. Experiment to see how you can truly bring out someone's eyes with an opposite color.
Secret #6: Flattening your face
Some of our faces are rounder than others. Where some people have somewhat of an oval-shaped face, others have faces that are more akin to a circle. While there's nothing wrong with that sometimes you (or a client) may want your face to look a bit flatter. Makeup school will teach you how to properly contour, highlight, and enhance the features and shape of your face.
Contouring is all about shading and highlighting. If you darken an area, it will recede whereas if you make it lighter it will become more noticeable. With the right application of shading and highlighting you can make a round face appear more oval and vice versa.Featured Image Credit: 504497 / Pixabay
